Taking in the picturesque Bavarian market town of Murnau as well as the state’s culture-rich capital, Munich, this tour combines a luxurious country retreat with a fascinating city break to create the perfect Germany getaway.

Beginning in tranquil Murnau, enjoy a relaxing stay in the elegant Alpenhof Murnau hotel where you can feel pampered in the spa, invigorated out in the stunning open countryside and spoilt in the hotel’s Michelin star restaurant. In Munich, the city famed for its annual Beer Festival, discover spectacular cultural sights such as the Nymphenburg Palace, whilst staying in a first-class city-centre hotel.

Suggested itinerary:

Day 1: London to Munich, Munich to Murnau
Fly from London to Munich. Collect your hire car at the airport and travel onwards to Murnau, just 70 km outside of Munich, where you will enjoy an indulgent two night stay in the Alpenhof Murnau. As a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this stunning 5* hotel is sure to delight on every level, from its Michelin star restaurant to its therapeutic spa.

Framed picturesquely by the Bavarian Alps, Murnau is a quaint little market town surrounded by beautiful open countryside and crystal clear alpine lakes, perfect for those who want to relax in a blissfully peaceful setting but also for those who love invigorating outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, cycling and horseback riding.

Day 2: Murnau
Today you can enjoy a full day’s sightseeing in this pretty Bavarian town, famous for its Blue Rider Painters. During 2008, Murnau will be celebrating the lives and works of renowned Expressionist artists Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour following in the painters footsteps and view some of their works in the Murnau Castle Museum. The Murnauer Moos Nature Reserve around Lake Staffelsee, situated just outside of Murnau, is an area of outstanding natural beauty and definitely worth a visit.

Why not round off your last day in Murnau with a romantic candlelit dinner in the hotel’s Michelin starred Reiterzimmer restaurant? Enjoy tantalising cuisine and fine wine complemented by the excellence of Michelin star service.

Day 3: Murnau to Munich
Travelling back to Munich today affords you the perfect opportunity to visit Oberammergau, the village of the world-famous ‘Passion Play’, as well as the monastery in neighbouring village Ettal. The monks of Ettal Abbey are well-known for their beer brewing and liquor distillery with visitors coming all year round especially to sample the wonderful local produce.

Upon arrival in Munich, check in to the 5* Hotel Königshof. This first-class hotel is centrally located on Karlsplatz, making the ideal starting point for exploring the city’s many architectural and historical sights.

Today you’ll discover there is much more to Munich that just its famous Beer Festival. Visit the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace, the striking Olympic stadium and the Pinakothek gallery is certainly not to be missed. Relax with an afternoon stroll through the city’s pretty Englischer Garten, a large urban park stretching from the centre to the north-eastern outskirts of Munich.

Day 4: Munich
Following breakfast enjoy the day at leisure exploring more of this fabulous city. Visit the lovingly restored Residence Palace in all its opulent glory. It houses the grand Residence Theatre as well as a fascinating collection of museums and historical monuments. Scale the three hundred steps to the top of the city’s oldest parish church, Peterskirche, for stunning panoramic views over Munich.

Day 5: Munich/London
After breakfast check out of the hotel and transfer to Munich airport from your onward flight to the UK.
