Why you're safe with the holiday experts

DERTOUR is part of the DERTOUR GmbH group of Frankfurt - one of the world's leading tour operators . We also hold our own ATOL and are members of ABTA.

We've been creating perfect tailor-made holidays to the heart of Europe for 50 years. A lot has changed in that time, but one thing that has always remained the same is our total focus on serving you in the very best way that we can. This includes ensuring your satisfaction and security. It's why DERTOUR is fully licenced with our own ATOL and is also adheres to all the rules and principles of ABTA.

ATOL is a financial protection scheme for holidaymakers travelling on an air inclusive holiday, which is managed by the Civil Aviation Authority. This protects you from losing your money or from being stranded overseas in the very unlikely event that DERTOUR should go out of business. Our Air Travel Organiser's Licence (ATOL) number is ATOL 1839.

When you buy an ATOL protected air inclusive holiday* from us, you will receive a confirmation invoice from us (or via our authorised agent through which you booked) confirming your arrangements and your protection under our ATOL.

* The air inclusive holidays we arrange are ATOL protected providing either the person who pays for the booking is present in the UK when the booking is made or the first leg of any flight or flights we arrange for you commences in the UK. For further information, visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk

ABTA was created in 1950 by 22 leading travel companies. It now represents over 5,000 travel agencies and more than 900 tour operators, right across the British Isles. ABTA helps to maintain the highest standards of trading practice for the travel industry and its customers. The ABTA logo is a sign that you can expect choice, value and high levels of service from DERTOUR.

DERTOUR is also fully committed to always try to provide an alternative holiday or route in times of disruption that is out of our control, such as in the event of volcanic ash, disruption to air travel due to heavy snowfall or an airline strike grounding aircraft.

If you have any questions about our ABTA membership or the financial protection provided under our ATOL, please don't hesitate to call us on 020 7290 1104.

Destinations » Switzerland » Biel Travel Guide

Biel/Bienne is a the 10th largest city of Switzerland and is located on the northern edge of the canton of Berne. Famous for watchmaking, and home to Rolex, Omega and Swatch among other famous makers. The city lies at the foot of the first mountain range of the Jura Mountains area, guarding the only practical connection to Jura in the area, and on the northeastern shores of Lake Biel (Bielersee, Lac de Bienne), sharing the eastern tip of the lake with its sister city, Nidau.

The main shopping district is in the middle of the city. The main shopping streets are the Bahnhofsstrasse and the Nidaugasse. Both car-free! For example: Buy a watch made in Biel/Bienne (ex: Omega, Swatch, Rolex, Candino and a lot more)

There are inexpensive places to eat all through the centre, including self-service meals at the huge Migros supermarket at Freiestrasse 3. Caffè Spettacolo is opposite the station, with plenty of coffees and focaccia-style snacks, while round the corner at Bahnhofstrasse/Rue de la Gare 4 is Café Hasard, a small and attractive little daytime nook. The best place for restaurants, though, is in the Old Town: St Gervais, Untergasse/Rue Basse 21, is a lively, friendly, alternative-style joint with quality nosh, not the only choice on the street. Kreuz, Hauptstrasse/Rue Principale 23 in Nidau, a pleasant little town contiguous with Biel/Bienne to the south (032/331 93 03) is a wonderfully relaxed co-operative-run café and restaurant - old wood floors inside, garden terrace out back - serving excellent organic and veggie food (menus from Fr.15). The restaurant at the Villa Lindenegg hotel has gourmet evening menus (Fr.20) with or without meat using market-fresh produce inventively and attractively. La Poissonière, in the train station (032/322 33 11) is celebrated as an especially classy formal restaurant, but L'Amphitryon, in Hôtel Elite takes the biscuit as one of the highest star-rated restaurants in the country (menus from Fr.80; closed Sun).

The Ring is the historic center of Biel/Bienne, with a fountain dating back to 1546. From here, it's only a few steps to the Burggasse/Ruhe de Bourg, where you'll find the Town Hall (1534), a theatre that once served as an armory (1591), and the Fountain of Justice from 1714.

Once you've explored the old town, you might want to visit some of Biel/Bienne's museums, such as the Schwab Museum (archaelogical relics) and the Omega Museum (clocks and watches). The lake itself is another attraction, with steamer cruises from late spring through early fall. And if you're partial to views, try the two funicular railways that climb the local hills.
