Destinations » Italy » Lake Garda Travel Guide

The beautiful lakeside towns around Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) have charmed foreign visitors for centuries. Even for the ancient Romans, the area was a luxury summer destination; in Sirmione and Desenzano you can visit ruins and mosaics that record their presence.

Located in the foothills of the Alps in the scenic area of Lombardy and surrounded by the Dolomites, the largest lake in Italy also stands among the cleanest and most beautiful. Flourishing lemon trees, oleanders, magnolias and plenty of olive groves create Lake Garda's landscape and open the door to numerous activities and excursions. Hire a boat, walk or hike around the pretty villages, visit ancient cities such as Verona or Venice. Whether you choose to relax by the water or in one of the picturesque flowery gardens, stroll along the local lively street markets and exclusive shops, or if you would like to participate in some sports, there is everything you could possibly wish for: from paragliding, mountain biking and free-climbing to scuba diving and windsurfing.

Whether Versace, Armani or Dolce Gabbana - everyone knows that the heart of the world of fashion beats in Italy. Shopping in the little towns on Lake Garda is great fun, as weekly markets, small boutiques or designer outlets offer a wide choice and every visitor will find it difficult to return home without having bought something new.

Ristorante Al Progresso: This restaurant sits on the main street of the Old Town in Sirmione and offers Italian and seafood specialties, such as tortellini variations, shellfish from the close Adriatic, fresh lake trout; grilled or boiled with a house sauce of garlic, oil, capers, and anchovies as well as various veal dishes, drizzled with fresh lemons that grow on the shores of the lake.

Birreria Spaten: This popular place is located on the ground floor of an ancient palace in Riva Del Garda and offers a great variety of dishes, international as well as typical Italian ones, with ingredients from the surrounding regions. Pasta such as strangolapreti (spinach-and-ricotta dumplings in a butter sauce), a fine selection of pizzas, grilled lake trout, Tirolean specialties including cotechino (spicy sausage), wurstel, canederli (a giant bread dumpling) and sauerkraut can be found on the menu.

La Roccia: The menu of this splendid Trattoria in Sirmione features a grand choice of mouth-watering pizzas made in a wood-burning oven alongside excellent pasta dishes, fish and meat.  Sit in the pleasant garden and watch the chef prepare and grill your food over an open fire!

Sirmione: This attractive resort is set on a narrow peninsula of cypress and olive groves in the southern waters of Lake Garda and is Garda's most popular holiday destination. With its numerous beautiful beaches there are plenty of opportunities to relax, stroll along or go for a refreshing swim.

Sirmione's charming Old Town features the Castello Scaligero, which dates back to the 13th century, a great deal of beautiful marble streets and little shops where you can find pretty souvenirs and Italian fashion. A little tram takes you out to the Roman ruins of Grotte di Catullo, to be found in the very northern part of the Old Town. You can wander around while enjoying stunning lake views.

A romantic trip on the boat from Malcesine to Limone: if you go to the northern sides of the lake check the boat timetables and take this wonderful trip. You'll see the lake coasts you cannot see in any other way, and visit the quiet villages. Very cool shopping and eating.

Visit the MART, in Rovereto: the most important cultural event during the last 30 years in Italy, have been the opening of this Multimedia Museum in Rovereto (a few km up north of Riva). It its permanent exibhitions of modern and contemporary art in an innovative architecture.

A dinner by "Ago & Rita": On Torri del Benaco, the Verona side of the lake, among the olive trees, Ago waits for you in his "Trattoria" where you can taste Tigelle, Salami and Cheeses, Gnocco Fritto and other specialties with wine, grappa, music and Agos's own show. Young people come from everywhere in northern Italy to spend the entire evening here (Dancing to late hours, Reserving highly recommended!)

Reach the Monte Baldo summit, with the new Rotating cablecar: Leaving from Malcesine it brings you up to the Monte Baldo summit, see the incredible landscape of the lake from the summit, hike freely trough Monte Baldo paths or bring your mountain bike with you.
