For those who want some peace and quiet after spending time in lively towns, the scenic countryside of the Saxony-Anhalt region in Germany will provide fabulous relaxation on a wide range of tours.
Saxony-Anhalt is bordered by Brandenburg in the northeast, Saxony and Thuringia in the south and Lower Saxony in the northwest. The state capital and seat of government is Magdeburg.
There are four UNESCO World Heritage sites to be found in Saxony-Anhalt, all within an hour's driving distance. Visit the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, marvel at the Dessau Bauhaus and its "Meisterhäuser", wander through the Luther towns of Wittenberg and Eisleben, or explore the historic old town of Quedlinburg. To find this many UNESCO World Heritage sites so close together is unique in Germany.
The Harz Mountains and the Brocken, which at 1141 metres is Germany's highest peak in this low mountain range, is the ideal region for hiking fans. Deep gorges, romantic valleys, old monasteries and castles provide an insight into German "landscapes of the soul".
Garden enthusiasts will find 200 years of horticultural art in Saxony-Anhalt, such as the Drübeck convent gardens, English-style landscape gardens in Wörlitz and the 'Herrenkrug Park' in Magdeburg.
