Christmas Markets » German Christmas Markets » Munich Christmas Markets 2013

In late November of each year, Munich is transformed in to a winter wonderland that hosts one of the best Christmas markets in the world. The historic backdrop of the city provides a magnificent setting for the festivities, glittering lights, wooden huts and spectacular Christmas trees. The most famous of all the Munich Christmas markets is the Marienplatz situated in front of the city's town hall. This particular market has its roots that dating back to the 14th Century.

Traditional, handmade Christmas gifts are available in abundance and make for great stocking fillers, from intricate wood carvings from Oberammergau, gingerbread and Bavarian glasswork. Uniquely to the Marienplatz market a daily Christmas concert is performed on the city steps to the delight of the waiting crowds.

All the usual German delicacies are available from any of the markets in the city, Gluhvein flows freely from numerous stalls and the aroma of hot chestnuts roasting and grilled sausages only adds to the Christmas ambience.

Christmas Markets in Munich

Possibly the most beautiful Christmas market in Munich can be found in the district of Haidhausen. Munich city breaks are a great way to prepare for Christmas and get in the festive spirit of things. This particular market allows for a relaxed and intimate feel, away from the more tourist focused areas of the city.

In addition, there are 20 more Christmas markets located throughout the city of Munich, including the Christmas market at Sendlinger Tor, only a short walk away from the main market at Marienplatz, taking in a more craft focused feel and allows you to try your hand at candle making and glass blowing, adding those personal touches to your presents this year. The market also sells unique spices, teas and essential oils from the Orient, giving the whole market an inimitable Christmas feel.
